About Scrabble scoring
Scrabble (Alfred Mosher Butts, 1948) is published by Hasbro in the USA and Canada and by Mattel elsewhere. Each turn scores the letter values of every word formed or modified. Premium squares double or triple a letter or a whole word. Playing all seven tiles in one turn adds 50 points, after any doubling or tripling.
Premium squares are easy to count twice. A square’s bonus applies only in the turn a tile is first placed on it. Later words through that square score the tile at face value. A blank scores 0, even on a letter square, but on a word square it still doubles or triples the word.
The game ends when the bag is empty and a player uses their last tile, or when all players pass twice in a row. If players finish level, the app applies Hasbro’s tie rule: the higher score before unplayed tiles were added or subtracted wins. On the sheet that is the Word Points total; if those are level too, the players share the place. Mattel’s rules name no tiebreaker.
You enter each turn’s score, so the sheet works with the letter values of any language edition. It is for the standard game for 2 to 4 players; the cooperative Scrabble Together side of Mattel’s two-sided board is not covered.
How Scrabble is scored
Scrabble is scored turn by turn: the app keeps a running tally of each turn's points, premium squares and the 50-point bonus included. When the game ends, each player loses the value of the tiles left on their rack. A player who used all their tiles gains the total left on the other racks.
The rows below are the app's Scrabble sheet, in the order of the game's score pad. "You enter" is the row's own explanation in the app; "Points" is what the app does with the entry.
Word Points
You enter: Total points scored for words over the whole game.
Points as entered.
Unplayed Letters
You enter: The total value of the letters left on your rack when the game ends. Enter 0 if you played out all your letters.
Points: What you enter is taken away from your score. The player who used all their letters enters 0 and gets everyone else's unplayed letter points added.
When one player plays out all their letters, the app adds the value of every other player's unplayed letters to that player's score, as the official rules say. If the game ended on passes, nobody gets the bonus.
Tiebreaker
If totals are equal, the player with the higher Word Points wins.
